Greek mythology describes the Harpies as fairies of the air. Their name means “snatchers” or “swift robbers” and they would swipe up evildoers with their claws and take them to Erinyes or Tartus for punishment. Winged birds with the heads of women, they are sometimes described as beautiful winged maidens, and sometimes described as ugly female vultures. Known as Vittra in Nordic mythology.
